July 2003 EP 5: Vintage Beats for the True Connoisseur

EP 5 contains four classic tracks from Northern Europe compiled by the master distiller Jacques Laverne with a rare 2003 vintage.

First up on the A side are Beatphreak who are the self proclaimed breakbeat and bass junkies are Jason Holmes DJ and Producer and Django Programmer engineer.Beatphreak are based up in Lancaster have DJ'd throughout the UK and Europe including 333 and have represented the Fat City crew for many years. They construct a mixture of turntablism, funky breaks and DJ sets mixing up crispy cuts and fat bass licks digging in the crates of hip hop and funks rich history. Jason Holmes has been a regular DJ at Manchester's Friends and Family club and Beatphreak remixed Case 358 by Ben Horn on the last release from Jacques Laverne.

We are delighted that they are releasing Gospel Nights and Soul Power with us and they have also added a chunky remix for the B side. On the flip side are Danish based Blue Foundation with their rare and unique blend of dark massive beats and deep abstract soundscapes. Blue Foundation are Tobi, Kir, Bo Rande, Japanese DJ Tatsuki and slam poet MC Jabber. Bassment is a haunting instrumental, where as track 2 Old days is a more uptempo affair which would grace any dancefloor.

Blue Foundation have released material before on April records and Moshi Moshi and were part of the infamous Jack To Phono release which launched jacques Laverne Records back in 2001 with the track Abstract Movement part 2. Back in the native Denmark they are very well established and have played Roskilde Festival and were also touring Japan back in 2001 with big praise from DJ Krush and the Kyoto Jazz Massive. They have been part of the Scandinavian skate scene for the last five years and DJ Tatsuki is currently on tour in Japan- Both Beatphreak and Blue Foundation have been guests of the Copenhagen's influx parties on more than one occasion which makes this release all the more sweeter!

This is the fifth EP in the series and follows Jack to Phono, Folklore and Fairytale, The Currymints and Adventures In Aural Pleasures. This release will lead into the CD compilation in the the near future. The past EPs have been supported by the likes of Andy Weatherall, Groove Armarda, Mr Scruff, Rob Da Bank, Chris Coco, Quantic, Rob Luis, XFM and Bonobo so not bad then!

JLR CD Compilation

We are currently compiling the first JLR cd compilation for release which includes 2 tracks from the above release as well as Mr Scruff, Riton and introduces new artists Adult Baby and T-Spark to the label. Also case 358 by Ben Horn and The Old Days 777 remix of Monochrome will be included on a compilation on Murena records to celebrate Copenhagen club life. This goes along with the Barcelona label that selected The Currymints track showing the true European spread of JLR!

January 2003 JLR In the Press!!

Jacques Laverne Records are enjoying a well deserved slice of the media pie in February, with features in two of the UK's leading music magazines.

Jack to Phono is interviewed in this months International DJ along with Howie B and Jean-Claudes, giving their thoughts on Mo' Wax's influence on their music over the years.

Also, the new much anticipated JLR EP4 "Adventures in Aural Pleasures" came in at the none too shabby number one spot in Mixmags top 5 tunes of the month, proving that it was more than worth the wait (not that there was any doubt)

Being the bastions of musical taste that you are, you'll already be subscribers to both of these publications, but heres the articles anyway.

Jack to Phono
(Jacques Laverne Records)
“Mo’ Wax was one of three labels in the ‘90’s that changed what music I listened to and bought! Our sessions in Copenhagen were named after the Shadow track ‘In/Flux’, which shows the influence this label had. ‘Clubbed to Death’ is the tune i would most likely play to extra-terrestrials on their first visit to earth!”

IDJ MAGAZINE, February 2003

Mixmag Top 5 Tunes
Number#1- JLR EP4 “Adventures in Aural Pleasures”
(Jacques Laverne Records)
Four Acts from Danish label, Jacques Laverne, battle - well, hug - it out in a reclined way over a quartet of stellar tracks. Nordic niceness in the shape of Ben Horn's 'Case 358' is the prime cut of bacon, being, as it is, a lazy amble through hip hop beats, eerie vinyl cracklings and oddball samples. Smoking!

MIXMAG, February 2003
